A story from Wonderland

My art project About Alice and the Rabbit draws inspiration from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The photographic series is based on a fictional frame story centered around a sketchbook I have inherited from my grandmother. Through drawings and notes, the pages of the sketchbook reveal a tale of an underground Wonderland—one different from the version Carroll told: Alice and the Rabbit share a rather consequential romance.

The story of Alice and the Rabbit reflects the secrets within my own family, disguising them in the form of a fairy tale. I am fascinated by how truths can be hidden within stories we regard as mere fables, and how even the most trusted sources can present as truth things that are, in fact, products of belief.

This series was completed in 2011, though the story and the first illustrations date back to 2003. The work has been exhibited at various venues, including the Alice in Wonderland group exhibition at the Kerava Art Museum Sinkka (2018) and the Photography Open Salon at Galerie Huit in Arles, France (2012), where it won first prize among 100 artists. One piece from the series is part of the Finnish State Art Collection.
